Folding Umbrella Market Train
Scenic and local life on the way to one of the most unique and popular attractions for tourists, the Folding Umbrella Market, Talat Lom Hup in Thai. Every day the trains pass through, forcing vendors to collect their goods, only some small crates stay on the ground. The one-line train, operating since 1905 to transport merchandises from Mae Khlong to Bangkok. Because of the lack of laws to empower the authorities to buy the land and built the tracks, the market stayed where it was.
How To Get There
Take the earlier train to Mahachai in order to get the Mae Khlong market before the horde of tourists.
From BTS Wongwian Yai (Silom line) walk about 300 meters on the footbridge towards Taksin intersection, exit number 3, then walk towards Wongwian Yai (2 to 300 meters) and at the pedestrian bridge take the soi on your left and you are at the station.
Wongwian Yai to Mahachai,18 stations, first train 05.30, every hour, 10 baht.
Returns every hour from 8.00 to11.45, and then 13.15, 14.30, 15.30, 16.00, 16.30, 17.35, 18.10 and 19.00.
One an hour to Mahachai station (terminal), the train is going a short distance through the market of one of the largest seafood market in Thailand. If you hang around, wait for the next train and see the vendors moving their baskets of fish, 6 times a day. Lots of activities going on. On the way to catch the ferry as you will pass the interesting local market but be aware, to catch the train to Mae Khlong from Mahachai station take around 15 to 20 minutes.
To Mae Klong Folding Umbrella Market
At Mahachai market you get off on the left-hand side of the train, go to the market street, turn right and straight to the end, take left to the ferry, 5 minutes to cross the Tha Chin River, 5 baht. Out of the pier, turn right, pass the big Golden Buddha and you are at Ban Laem railway station. One hour ride to Mae Klong, 15 stations (terminal) and once you are in the market select the spot to take photos of the returning train through the market. Be careful, the space between the track and the vendors’ stalls is very narrow and can be hazardous when the train passes through.

From Mae Khlong to Amphawa Floating Market
You can go from Mae Khlong to Amphawa floating market and I recommend taking a songthaew (pick-up, local taxi) Around 10-15 minutes, 8 baht.
For the return to Bangkok from Amphawa where I always spend a night, you can take a bus or a van from there but I prefer to go to Mae Khlong, spend some time on the market and from there take a van.
